Member Spotlight: Marilyn Barrett

Marilyn Barrett brings extensive experience, pragmatism and innovative thinking to help clients effectively solve difficult problems and negotiate favorable deals.    Marilyn helps clients resolve tax disputes with the IRS, FTB, and California tax agencies and execute their business transactions for the most effective tax and business result.   In recent months, Marilyn secured a favorable private ruling relating to a potential self-dealing transaction with a private foundation, negotiated a “no change” audit result in connection with a complex tax return, prepared an application for tax-exempt status for a “friends” organization to raise funds for a renown international organization,  advised several clients on complex real estate transactions, and negotiated a favorable transaction on behalf of a client selling his very successful business.  

Marilyn earned a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Kansas and a J.D. from UCLA School of Law.   Marilyn is a Certified Public Accountant and a former chair of the Taxation Sections of the California State Bar and of the Los Angeles County Bar.    Marilyn is a  “Super Lawyer” in Taxation and is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale- Hubbell.  Marilyn has authored more than 40 articles for legal journals and is the contributing editor on Federal Taxation for the CEB California Business Law Reporter.  

Marilyn has been active in community affairs.  She is currently a member of the Friends Board of the Saban Free Clinic. She previously served on the operating Board of the Clinic and was elected  President of the Board of Directors two years in a row.   Throughout her legal career, she has provided pro bono legal services to more than 20 charitable organizations to assist them in securing tax-exempt status.  Marilyn has also received numerous awards.  She was honored by the Saban Free Clinic with the 2008 Lenny Somberg Award, the 2000 Women of Achievement Award in Law given by the Century City Chamber of Commerce; the 1987 Humanitarian Award from the Los Angeles Commission On Assaults Against Women and the 1993 Commendation from the Los Angeles County Commission on the Status of Women for her work with victims of sexual assault.
